Many people ask me -‘What exactly is Pilates?’. Boy is that a loaded question! After 15 years of being a Pilates fan, I still can’t sum it up in an easy way. And you know why? Because when you ‘get into Pilates’ you realise how crazy complex it is!
We have all heard the standard reply – its non-impact, it uses core strength, stability, it improves flexibility, strength……etc etc etc.
But is that really Pilates?
Romana Kryzanowska summed it up so well – “You can say what Pilates is in three words. Stretch with Strength and Control. And the control part is the most important because that makes you use your mind.”
3 words …..well what do they mean to me?
Stretch to me is suppleness and freedom – not only in my body but in my mind. Being open to feeling new connections – how powerful is that to your mindset! I am not a dancer, I am an Accountant. Trust me when I say I am not flexible in my body! Pilates has allowed me to accept where my body is and also to stretch me out of my comfort zone!
Strength to me is a Strength of character, courage. Pilates helps me find my inner strength in my daily life. It centres and grounds me. After every single Pilates workout, I ALWAYS feel better – stronger in my body and in my mind.
Control to me is calmness, composure and direction. Mind over body. A very powerful form of meditation.
And I’ll add in 2 other words – Balance and Connection.
Balance to me is finding the right formula for your body and of course taking this into your life! Work Life balance and balance in the family.
Connection to me is finding the links in my body, feeling my body where it is stuck, where it is good and also connecting as an to Instructor. It’s all about trust as they take you on your journey!
To me the Pilates method educates us about our bodies – connect your body to your mind and finding your balance – in every aspect of your life. That is what Pilates is to me.
