How to sum up Pilates…
Many people ask me: “What exactly is Pilates? Well, that’s a loaded question! After 15 years of passion for Pilates, I still can’t sum it up in a simple way. And do you know why? Because when you start Pilates, you realize just how crazy and complex it is!
We’ve all heard the standard answer: it has no impact, it uses core strength, stability, it improves flexibility, resistance… etc., etc…
But is it really Pilates?
Romana Kryzanowska summed it up so well: “You can say what Pilates is in three words. Stretch with strength and control. And the control part is the most important because it makes you use your mind.
3 words…..eh well, what do they mean to me?
For me,
stretching
is synonymous with flexibility and freedom, not only in my body but also in my mind. Be open to feeling new connections – how powerful this is for your state of mind! I’m not a dancer, I’m an accountant. Trust me when I say that I’m not flexible in my body! Pilates has allowed me to accept where my body is and also to stretch myself out of my comfort zone!
For me, the
strength
is strength of character, courage. Pilates helps me find my inner strength in my daily life. It centers me and motivates me. After each Pilates session, I ALWAYS feel better, stronger in body and mind.
For me, the
control
is calmness, composure and direction. Mind over body. A powerful form of meditation.
And I would add 2 other words: balance and connection.
For me,
balance
means finding the right formula for your body, and of course integrating it into your life! Work-life balance and family equilibrium.
The
connection
with me means finding the links in my body, feeling my body where it’s stuck, where it’s good, and also connecting as an instructor. It’s all a question of trust when they accompany you on your journey!
For me, Pilates is about learning about your body – connecting your body to your mind.
connect your body to your mind and find balance
– in all aspects of your life. That’s what Pilates is for me.
